Gomasio - "goma" is the Japanese word for "sesame" and "sio" is the Japanese word for "salt" - is a mixture of sesame seeds and unrefined sea salt (5%). The unrefined sesame seeds are first roasted lightly separately and then ground together with the sea salt. In this way, each grain of salt is enveloped in the oil of the ground sesame seeds. A healthy way to flavour your food, with much less sodium than with pure salt. Gomasio is high in phosphorus, calcium, magnesium and iron. Magnesium and Calcium contribute to the maintenance of normal bones. The combination of sesame (very rich in Calcium) and sea salt (rich in Magnesium) makes gomasio a valuable spice.
This spice has a delicate flavour. It is a kind of 'salt' that not only makes your dishes salty: it also adds the discrete flavour of sesame. Gomasio is also appreciated with hot dishes, cereals, soups and vegetables, and as a garnish for salads and raw vegetables.
