NOTE ON CHARCOAL IN INCENSE:

Yet, the use of pure coal produces a much cleaner combustion than that of wood dust or other organic matter because it has already passed the pyrolysis (carbonization) phase. Charcoal is used in toothpastes or even as an antidote to poisoning. Wood dust has not yet passed the carbonization phase that causes it to produce volatile gases, tars and acidic liquids when burned. The combustion of wood dust will therefore dilute or modify the characteristics of the odorous substances contained in the incense. Some incense manufacturers use charcoal and mix it with chemical combustion activators that contain sulfur or nitrogen, which probably gave charcoal its bad reputation.
